Dealing with over 1.4 million items of undeliverable mail from across the UK every week, the Royal Mail’s National Return Letter Centre is housed within a ten-storey building at Donegal Quay in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Recently it took delivery of 1,400m² of Heuga 345 Universe carpet tiles from Interface as part of a major refurbishment; at the same time the existing floorcovering was recycled through the Interface Re-Entry programme.
Heuga 345 Universe is a tufted loop pile tile and is a well established product within the Heuga range, the colour chosen by Royal Mail, from the palette of 36 that is offered, was Tropicana. In a contract worth £250,000, it was employed in the open plan environment of the National Return Letter Centre and was laid between vinyl walkways in the areas where teams work to try to identify the sender of each undeliverable item of mail so that it can be returned.
Interface products are regularly used by Royal Mail and Interface has twice been awarded its Gold Standard, recognising the company as a First Class Supplier. The Royal Mail First Class Supplier programme focuses on the measurement of supplier performance and assesses suppliers against criteria such as quality, service, cost and sustainable development.
Sustainability is a key issue for Royal Mail and, through the Interface Re-Entry scheme, the existing carpet tiles within the Letter Centre were uplifted for refurbishment through Pennine Magpie, a not-for-profit company, ready for a useful second life.
Mark McCormick, of Kingsway Building & Painting Contractors which undertook the installation, comments: “Heuga Universe provides high levels of durability and, unlike other similar products on the market, the carpet tile offers a joint-less finish and is ideal for most types of office traffic. I can’t fault Interface’s service; the unique recycling process that it offers on redundant products, which Kingsway and Royal Mail have taken full advantage of, reinforces our environmental policy on waste disposal in the construction industry.”
Ray Cochrane, project manager for Royal Mail Property Holdings, says: “Interface provides an excellent service, the product is good and it looks tremendous.”
