InterfaceFLOR, the worldwide leader in the manufacture of environmentally responsible modular flooring was on stage again last week to pick up its seventh accolade this year for its ongoing environmental initiatives.

The manufacturing giant was named National Green Champion within the Engineering and Manufacturing sector at the Green Apple Awards for its Mission Zero initiative – the company’s plan to completely eliminate its environmental footprint by the year 2020. Hosted by the Green Organisation and held at the House of Commons on Friday 9th November, the awards celebrate environmental best practice across all sectors of the UK industry.

Edmund Blamey, Sustainability Director at InterfaceFLOR said: “Mission Zero is drive for sustainability that permeates the entire business. We have been doing it for thirteen years now and this latest award demonstrates just how far we have come. The challenge now is to push on and develop new and innovative ways to further reduce our environmental footprint.”

Notable InterfaceFLOR achievements that have contributed to the accolade include:

  • Energy efficiency and renewable energy programmes have resulted in a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions since 1996
  • Improvements to its production processes have allowed an 80% reduction in water intake per m2 of production facilities
  • Petroleum based materials have been reduced by 29%
  • Since 1995, cumulative avoided costs from waste reduction have totalled $336m
  • All of InterfaceFLOR’s European factories work on 100% renewable electricity and 28% of the company’s total energy consumption now comes from renewable sources
  • Interface operates five facilities that use only renewable energy from sources such as biomass, solar and wind

The award was presented by the Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising and rewarding environmental best-practice.
