On a Mission for Absolute Sustainability

World’s Most Sustainable Company Publishes Latest Environmental Achievements.

30 April 2008: Interface, a world leader in the production and manufacture of floor covering has announced that it is on course to achieve its ‘Mission Zero’ target – the company’s goal to eliminate any negative effect it may have on the environment by 2020. New metrics published recently have shown that since embarking on Mission Zero in the mid-nineties, the company has achieved:

    ·
  • A 75% reduction in waste from manufacturing to landfill since 1996
  • ·
  • A reduction in Net Greenhouse Gas Emissions of 82%
  • ·
  • A reduction of 45% in total energy consumption per unit of output
  • ·
  • 100% renewable electricity used in manufacturing in Europe
  • ·
  • 27% of global energy consumption is from renewables
  • ·
  • A 75% reduction in global water reduction

As a result of all these initiatives, the company has saved more than $372 million in avoided waste costs.

Lindsey Parnell, President and CEO of InterfaceFLOR said: “The progress we have made to date is incredible but we mustn’t get complacent. We know that we still have a fair way to go before we successfully complete our mission. What these results do demonstrate is that sustainability impacts the bottom line and companies can do well by doing good.”

Interface’s progress has been recognized by a number of accolades in the first quarter of 2008. On the turn of the year, global research agency ‘Globescan’ ranked Interface number one globally for its commitment to sustainable development. Globescan surveyed some more than 3000 independent sustainability experts around the world to get the results, putting Interface in top position ahead of household brands such as Toyota and BP.

Similarly, in the UK, Interface’s modular flooring business, InterfaceFLOR, picked up a Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development – the second in the company’s history. Specifically, the company was recognized for having successfully managed to embed sustainability throughout its operations, making it central to its governance and management. It was also commended for the high benchmark it sets for its sector and beyond.
