Ray Anderson named 'Hero of the Environment' by TIME Magazine

Interface chairman honoured alongside business and industry greats

Founder and chairman of Interface Inc., Ray Anderson, was last night named one of TIME Magazine’s international ‘Heroes of the Environment’ at an awards ceremony held in London.

Ray was one of only 43 people to achieve the accolade, which pays tribute to international heroes from all walks of life – from Richard Branson to Al Gore – who have helped encourage environmental best practice.

The international Heroes Awards are now in their fifth year but this year focus for the first time on the environment with categories including Leaders and Visionaries, Scientists and Innovators, Activists, and Moguls and Entrepreneurs – the category in which Ray was honoured.

Other winners from this year include Prince Charles, David Attenborough, Al Gore and Robert Redford, while previous years’ winners have included Bono, David Beckham and Jamie Oliver.

Ray commented, “To be recognized alongside such notable people is a testament to the pioneering spirit of Interface. If a single, $1 billion company can make a difference, imagine the impact if everyone did it.”

Ray went on to say, “Interface is positive proof that sustainability opens up new, different and better ways of thinking. Out of that new mind-set is a better way to a bigger profit, and a significant competitive advantage.” Ray calls this new business model, “Doing Well by Doing Good.”

This latest accolade complements the Oglethorpe Sword presented to Ray by the British American Business Group in May. The award is given each year to an individual who has made a special contribution to developing investment and trade between the UK and the State of Georgia.
