Interface’s corporate vision is to become, by 2020, the first company to show, by its deeds, the entire industrial world what sustainability is in all its dimensions - people, process, product, place and profits.
Mission Zero is Interface’s promise to achieve a zero environmental footprint by 2020. The company considers the impact of every decision made at all levels in the company to ensure that it is moving closer to its goal.
Since 1996, the company has made considerable progress towards its 2020 vision:
A net absolute Greenhouse Gas Emisson (GHG) reduction of 60%
A global reduction in waste cost of approximately 34%
A global reduction of waste sent to landfill of 70%
Sources 16% of all energy from renewable sources
All of these initiatives have resulted in cumulative avoided costs of $336 million US dollars.
Interface uses offsetting to counteract the emissions of business-related activities that are not easily avoidable. For example, since 1997, the company’s Trees for Travel™ programme has offset all business related air travel.
Interface also aims to encourage its employees to adapt a more environmentally-friendly attitude to their every day life. This is evident from the Cool Fuel™ and Cool Co2mmute™ programmes, which enables employees to ensure that their transport to and from work causes as little damage as possible to the environment.
In 2007, InterfaceFLOR launched a new report called ‘Sustainable Futures’. The report brings together six separate views on the key issues for sustainable businesses from very different organisations such as: Forum for the Future; the Design Council and the Climate Group. The report looks at future challenges and opportunities to become more sustainable and shares a common theme throughout, there is a brighter future if we only dare to imagine it.
